Chinese is a language family consisting of languages which are mostly mutually unintelligible to varying degrees. Originally the indigenous languages spoken by the Han Chinese in China, it forms one of the branches of Sino-Tibetan family of languages. About one-fifth of the world's population or over one billion people speak some variety of Chinese as their native language, rather than separate languages.

There are between 7 and 17 main regional groups of Chinese, of which the most spoken, by far, is Mandarin, followed by Wu, Cantonese and Min. Most of these groups are mutually unintelligible, although some like Xiang and the Southwest Mandarin dialects may share common terms and some degree of intelligibility.

Standard Mandarin is spoken in China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and many other regions of the world.

The popularity of Chinese language has been increasingly growing over the last decade. China is becoming a dominant player in the international economic and financial system of this century. When China joined WTO, it created huge demands for a greater understanding and trading with the world’s fastest growing nation. Chinese language has become essential for business people and world travellers alike.
